Scuba dive Sodwana Bay
Sodwana bay
Just a visit to this area situated in the costal dunes, is breathtaking.
The large wooden, ranch type, luxury accommodation is nestled
in lush coastal vegetation. Overlooking a fresh water lake, the
Sodwana Bay Lodge sets the site for a relaxed and exciting stay.
Sodwana's string of coral reef is a dive site that is treasured
by all Southern African divers. The fish and coral diversity is
overwhelming. The coral, dominated by soft corals, cannot be found
in any other part of the world.
The string of coral reef runs from leven point, where the launch
site is situated, northwards. Dive boats, commonly known as rubber
ducks, can reach all the sites with ease. A careful launch through
the surf line and a short boat ride places divers over the dive
sites on the largest of the reef formations, 2 Mile reef.
Dive sites are found at 10, 15, 16, and 18 meters, with the outer
edge, sponge reef, between 18 and 35 meters.
Sodwana bay's 2 Mile reef has a great number
of sites within its 2,1km length. Four Buoy, Pinnacle, Beginners
Buoy, Caves and Overhangs, Chain, Antons, Coral Gardens, Sponge
and Deep Sponge are a few of the better known and more frequently
dived sites.
Sitting just south of the 2 mile reef on the left is a small gem,
stringer reef, which, under the correct conditions is not to be
missed.
To the right, quarter mile has an excitement all of its own.
Further up the Sodwana bay's coast is 4/5 Mile.
18-24 meter dives, 8 km from jesser point. Ribbon reef promises
to be a great dive.
7 Mile reef is situated 11km from the launch
site and is one of the most popular further out dives, with a
reef formation known as “The Amphitheatre”. This area
is alive with all the fish life that one can imagine.
Sodwana's 9 Mile is 14 km from jesser point,
approx 500 meters off shore. The top of the reef starts at 6 meters
and drops to the sand at 21 meters. The seaward topography consists
of beautiful swim-throughs, overhangs and large caves. This reef
is well known for the coral green tree, a stunning green wire
coral and gorgonian sea fan.
Sodwana Bay spoils those who visit her with her magnificent marine
life and colourful corals.
Once experienced, little compares.
